SMUD Is Paying Sacramento Homeowners Up to $10,000 for Adding a Battery — Here's How It Works

If you have solar panels on your home in Sacramento, there's a good chance you're sitting on an unclaimed check — and most people have no idea it exists.

Through the SMUD My Energy Optimizer Partner+ Program, the Sacramento Municipal Utility District is currently offering qualifying homeowners up to $10,000 to install a battery storage system. That's not a tax credit you wait a year for. That's a direct incentive — applied to your installation cost upfront.

Here's everything you need to know about the program, how to qualify, and what to expect.

What Is the SMUD Battery Rebate Program?

The SMUD My Energy Optimizer Partner+ Program is a battery storage incentive designed to strengthen Sacramento's electrical grid by encouraging homeowners to install home battery systems. Instead of firing up expensive, polluting peaker plants during peak demand hours, SMUD can draw energy from a network of home batteries — and they pay you for the privilege. The incentive is straightforward: SMUD pays approximately $500 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) of battery capacity installed, up to a maximum of $10,000 per household.

Do I Qualify?

There are two primary requirements:

• You must be a SMUD electric customer (SMUD serves most of Sacramento County, including Sacramento city, Elk Grove, Citrus Heights, Rancho Cordova, Folsom, Fair Oaks, Carmichael, and surrounding areas)

• You must have an existing qualifying solar system installed on your home

That second point is important: this is a solar-plus-battery program. If you don't have solar, you're not eligible for the SMUD incentive — though you may still benefit from a battery for backup power purposes. If you're considering adding solar and a battery at the same time, that combination can also qualify.

Renters are not eligible. The program is for homeowners only.

How Much Will SMUD Pay?

The incentive is calculated based on the kilowatt-hour capacity of your battery system:

Battery System

Approximate SMUD Incentive

Tesla Powerwall 3 (13.5 kWh)

~$5,400

Two Tesla Powerwall 3s

~$10,000 (capped maximum)

The $10,000 cap means that even if you install a higher-capacity system, the maximum payout from SMUD is $10,000 per household. Two Powerwall 3s (27 kWh total) hit that ceiling comfortably.

What About the Tesla Virtual Power Plant Program?

If you install a Tesla Powerwall, you have the option to enroll in Tesla's Virtual Power Plant (VPP) program in partnership with SMUD. This program pays you approximately $440 per year, per Powerwall, for allowing SMUD and Tesla to occasionally draw a portion of your stored energy during peak grid demand.

Homeowners who participate still retain a backup reserve — meaning your lights stay on during an outage. For most participants, the grid draw events are brief and largely unnoticeable in day-to-day use.

That's an ongoing annual benefit on top of the one-time installation incentive — just for owning the battery.

What Are the Other Benefits of Adding a Battery?

Beyond the SMUD incentive and VPP earnings, a home battery system delivers several practical advantages for Sacramento homeowners:

• Backup power during outages — Sacramento experiences heat-related grid stress events every summer. A Powerwall keeps your home running when the grid goes down. • Lower electric bills — Store cheap solar energy during the day and use it during SMUD's higher-rate evening hours instead of drawing from the grid.

• Protection against future rate increases — Utility rates in California have historically risen year over year. A battery reduces your exposure to those increases.

• Increased solar ROI — A battery maximizes the value of your existing solar investment by storing what would otherwise be exported to the grid at lower net-metering rates.

How Does the Process Work?

Working with a certified SMUD My Energy Optimizer Partner simplifies the process considerably. Here's what to expect:

1. Free consultation — A certified installer reviews your solar system and confirms eligibility for the SMUD rebate program.

2. Installation — Your Tesla Powerwall is installed, typically in a single day.

3. Rebate paperwork — Your installer files the SMUD incentive application on your behalf.

4. Incentive issued — SMUD processes the incentive, typically within 6–8 weeks of installation and inspection.

5. VPP enrollment — If you choose to participate, your Powerwall is enrolled in the Tesla VPP program and you begin earning quarterly payments.

How Long Will This Program Last?

Utility incentive programs like this are funded allocations — not permanent commitments. SMUD can modify, reduce, or discontinue the program at any time once available funds are exhausted or program parameters change. The $10,000 maximum has been consistent recently, but that can shift.

If you've been thinking about adding a battery to your solar system, the best time to act is before availability changes.
