Here's what you should know

Understanding the SMUD battery rebate program — and how Sacramento homeowners can take advantage of it.

What Is SMUD?

Sacramento's Public Utility

SMUD (Sacramento Municipal Utility District) is the publicly owned electric utility serving the greater Sacramento area. Unlike investor-owned utilities, SMUD is operated for the benefit of its customers — which is part of why they're able to offer programs like this one. If SMUD is your electric provider, you may be eligible.
What Is The Rebate?

Up to $10,000 Back

SMUD is currently offering rebates to eligible homeowners who install a battery storage system. The rebate amount is determined by your system size and installation type — but qualifying homeowners can receive up to $10,000 back. This is a real utility rebate, not a promotional discount.
The Part Most People Don't Expect

you don't need solar to qualify

Most homeowners assume battery rebates are only for people who already have solar panels. That's not the case here. SMUD's program allows homeowners to install a battery that stores energy directly from the grid — giving you backup power during outages whether you have solar or not. If you do have solar, a battery lets you store what your panels generate instead of sending it back to the grid at a loss.

WHY SACRAMENTO HOMEOWNERS ARE INSTALLING BATTERIES

BACKUP POWER WHEN YOU NEED IT MOST

Outages in the Sacramento area aren't rare — and when the grid goes down, most homes go dark. A home battery keeps your lights, refrigerator, medical devices, and essential appliances running automatically, without a noisy gas generator. You won't even notice the grid went out.

STOP SENDING YOUR ENERGY BACK FOR PENNIES

If you have solar, your panels are likely sending excess energy back to the grid during the day, and SMUD pays you very little for it. A battery lets you keep that energy at home and use it in the evening when rates are higher and your panels aren't producing. You generated it. You should benefit from it.

PROTECT YOURSELF FROM RISING UTILITY RATES

Electricity rates have increased steadily every year, and there's no sign of that stopping. A battery lets you store energy when rates are low and draw from it when rates are high — reducing how much you depend on the grid and insulating yourself from future rate hikes.

IT WORKS WITHOUT SOLAR TOO

You don't need panels to benefit from a battery. Even connected solely to the grid, a battery charges during off-peak hours and gives your home a reliable backup reserve. Think of it as a safety net that also helps you use energy more efficiently — every single day, not just during outages.

how it works

Getting a battery installed through Empower is straightforward. Here's exactly what to expect.

Step 1

call us or submit your info

The first thing we do is verify that your home is within SMUD's service territory. This takes about two minutes. If you qualify, we'll walk you through the program details, answer any questions, and schedule a time to assess your home — no pressure, no commitment required at this stage.
Step 2

We Handle the Rebate Paperwork

Once you decide to move forward, Empower manages the SMUD rebate application on your behalf. You won't need to navigate the utility's process on your own. We've done this before and we'll make sure everything is submitted correctly so your rebate doesn't get held up.
Step 3

We Install Your Battery

Our licensed California installation team handles everything from permitting to final inspection. Most residential battery installations are completed in a single day. We'll walk you through how your system works before we leave, and we're available if questions come up after.
Step 4

Your Rebate Gets Processed

After installation, SMUD processes your rebate based on your system size and eligibility. Rebate amounts vary — you could receive anywhere up to $10,000 back. We'll keep you informed throughout the process so you always know where things stand.
