Here’s how smoke gets inside, what actually helps, and what to skip.

What PM2.5 is, and why it matters

PM2.5 refers to particles 2.5 micrometers across or smaller, much finer than household dust. They can travel deep into the lungs, and wildfire smoke is a major source of them. That’s why the air can look fine and still feel irritating, and why a strong smell is a sign to take action.

How smoke gets in

• Leaks: gaps around doors, windows and the attic.
• Your HVAC system: if it’s pulling in outdoor air, or ducts leak in a dusty attic, it can spread smoke through the whole house.
• A weak filter: a basic filter catches big dust but lets fine smoke particles pass.

What helps

• Upgrade the filter. Health agencies recommend MERV 13 or higher for smoke. Ask a pro first, because a denser filter can restrict airflow in some systems.
• Set the system to recirculate. Close the outdoor air intake during smoke events and run the fan.

Filter basics

MERV is a rating scale for how well a filter catches particles: the higher the number, the finer the particles it traps. Standard builder-grade filters sit at the low end and are designed to protect your equipment more than your air. Higher-rated filters catch much smaller particles, which is why they’re recommended for smoke.

A few things to keep in mind:

1. Fit matters. A great filter that lets air slip around its edges won’t do much.
2. Change it on schedule, and more often during smoke season. A clogged filter strains your system.
3. Check with a professional before moving to a much denser filter, since some systems weren’t designed for one.

Pick a purifier that fits the room

A portable HEPA purifier works best in a room sized for it. Check the manufacturer’s stated room size, keep doors closed, and run it on a higher setting during smoke events. The bedroom is the most useful place to start, since you spend the most uninterrupted time there.

What whole-home options do

Whole-home air purification attaches to your ductwork and treats air as it circulates through the house. Different products work in different ways, so ask what evidence supports the performance claims and whether the unit produces any ozone. A well-fitted, higher-rated filter is often the simplest first step, and a purifier can build on it.

What doesn’t

Skip ozone generators and “air fresheners.” Ozone is itself a lung irritant, and masking a smell isn’t cleaning the air. Opening windows during a smoke event usually makes things worse.

A simple plan for the next smoke event

2. Close windows and doors, and switch your system to recirculate.
3. Run the fan with your best filter in place.
4. Create one clean room, usually a bedroom: keep the door closed, and run a portable HEPA purifier there.
5. Limit indoor sources of extra particles, like frying food, burning candles or vacuuming with a basic vacuum.
6. Check your filter afterward. A dark, loaded filter is doing its job. Swap it for a fresh one.

How to build a clean room

The idea is to give yourself one space with the best air in the house. Pick a room you can close off, seal obvious gaps around the door and windows, and run a purifier sized for it. If anyone at home is sensitive to smoke, that’s where they can rest during a bad-air day.

When it’s time for a professional look

Think about a professional check if the smoky smell hangs around for days, your filters turn dark quickly, some rooms are much smokier than others, or anyone in your home has asthma or allergies.
