This Hurricane Season Has Been Quiet — Don’t Let That Fool Your Roof

Here’s some good news for a change. As of September 15, 2026, the Atlantic hadn’t produced a single hurricane, the longest stretch without one since satellite tracking began in 1966. Five tropical storms have formed (Arthur through Edouard), and none reached hurricane strength. A strong El Niño is largely responsible, and NOAA is calling for a below-normal season.
So, relax? Not entirely. And also, yes, use it.
Why a quiet season isn’t a free pass
The season officially runs through November 30, and forecasters still allow for up to 2 major hurricanes. Houston knows how one storm can define a year: Hurricane Beryl in July 2024 knocked out power to more than 2 million customers. Quiet years also breed complacency, and that’s when roof maintenance gets pushed off.
Why a quiet season is the best time to act
- No post-storm backlog. Roofers are booked solid after a hit. Right now you can get an appointment.
- No claim rush. You’re not making decisions while your ceiling drips.
- You can compare options calmly, including materials, warranties and timelines.
- Small fixes stay small. A lifted shingle is a quick repair. A lifted shingle plus a storm is a claim.
Your quick roof check
- Curling, cracked, lifted or missing shingles
- Flashing and sealant around vents, chimneys and skylights
- Gutters and downspouts full of debris
- Tree limbs hanging over the roof
- Ceiling stains or a musty attic
- Roof age, since Gulf Coast heat and humidity are hard on roofing
It’s also worth asking your insurance agent whether wind-resistant upgrades could affect your premium, since discounts vary by carrier.
A quiet hurricane season doesn’t mean a quiet sky
Houston-area roofs get tested by more than named storms. Severe thunderstorms, strong winds and heavy rain can hit in any season, and they can find the same weak spots a hurricane would. A roof that’s in good shape handles all of it better, whatever the forecast says.
Document your roof now
A quiet season is a good time to create a baseline. Take dated photos of your roof from the ground, of the ceilings inside, and of the attic if it’s safe to reach. If a storm does hit later, before-and-after images make it much easier to show what changed. Keep your policy documents somewhere you can find them, and note your deductible, including any separate wind or hurricane deductible.
If a storm is forecast
- Clear gutters and downspouts
- Trim or remove dead limbs you can safely reach
- Secure or store loose outdoor items
- Charge phones and keep your documents handy
- Know your evacuation plan and follow local officials’ guidance
Serving the Houston area
We inspect roofs across Greater Houston, including Sugar Land, The Woodlands, Katy, Pearland and Galveston. Whether you need a repair or it’s time to look at a full replacement, a slow year is the easiest time to do it. Coastal-county homeowners in particular may have separate windstorm coverage, so ask your agent how your policy treats roof condition.
